Intex’s First Firefox OS Smartphone Coming This August

Home grown manufacturer Intex has unveiled the tentative pricing and specifications of its first Firefox OS-based smartphone: the Cloud FX. The Intex Cloud FX will be up for grabs starting first week of August and will be priced just under Rs 3,500 in Sri Lankan Rupee.

They will run Mozilla’s HTML5 web-based mobile operating system, Firefox OS and Mozilla is pitching it as more open and better suited to low-end smartphones than Android or iOS.

The firm already sells Firefox-powered phones in Europe and Latin America.

The current handsets, which are sold via eBay, retail at £59.99 in the UK, or $69.99 in the US.

The announcement comes as mobile manufacturers increasingly attempt to break into emerging markets, where smartphones are less widespread, mainly due to their high costs.

Mozilla, which currently works with mobile manufacturers ZTE and Alcatel, among others, has partnered with two of Indian based low-cost handset makers, Intex and Spice, to develop the low-price phones.

They will be powered by chips from Chinese company Spreadtrum.

The Intex Cloud FX features an 8.89-cm (3.5-inch) display (resolution unspecified) and will be powered by a 1GHz processor with the number of cores and RAM unspecified as of now. The device will sport a 2MP rear camera, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Not surprisingly, the specifications detailed by Intex appear to be more or less similar to the reference $25 Firefox OS smartphone platform unveiled by Mozilla and Spreadtrum at MWC 2014. Mozilla had announced at the Mobile World Congress 2014 that it would be coming up with affordable Firefox OS-based devices for emerging markets this year.

“Intex association with Mozilla Firefox is a step towards our brand’s promise to offer quality products to our consumers to improve their lives and set industry benchmarks. Intex Cloud FX is aimed at fulfilling the idea of – ‘Smartphone for all’ which will be priced below Rs. 3,500 in Sri Lankan Rupee. This smartphones will be equipped with enhanced phone and browser features of Firefox OS with an access to a rich ecosystem of latest web applications improving users overall smartphone experience at affordable prices” Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, Business Head of the Mobile vertical at Intex was quoted as saying.
